Get Money, Get Safe

Where to look for assets and money.

Things to consider:

  • Security deposits. Usually placed on rental property or storage units and other purchases you were going to make together.
  • Hobby or coin collections. Antigues, artwork, tools, spoons from states, coins, rare baseball cards and guns. Have these collections appraised.
  • Series EE Savings Bonds or certificate "bearer" municipal bonds. These do not appear on account statements because they are not registered with the IRS. Currently they are being phased out.
  • Traveler's checks. You may be able to find these by tracing bank account deposits and withdrawals. It can be an easy way to hide cash.
  • Retirement accounts. You may not know they have existed for years.
  • Life insurance. Many whole life policies have a "savings" account built into them that you can access without penalty or borrow against.
  • Time Shares. These can be assets or headaches depending upon their value. Remember, there are yearly maintenance costs that need to be paid. If the time share is valuable, it can be sold - sometimes not very easily.
