Banking Safety Basics

- Use caution opening or maintaining joint accounts. Generally, either signer may withdraw money or close the account.
- When opening a new account check for the safety of branch and ATM locations you are likely to use. Check for lighting, security cameras, comfort with staff etc.
- Ask if a password can be established for accessing your account to protect your account from being accessed by others.
- Do not use a personal identification number (PIN) others may be able to guess such as your birthday or mother's maiden name.
- If you do not have a safe address ask if your statements and other bank documents can be mailed to your bank branch or sent electronically. Your bank may also be able to shred a reasonable amount of documents for you to protect against identity theft.
